After many months of planning and construction, the newly expanded and redesigned $4.3 million emergency department at Springs Memorial Hospital is complete. We understand that in an emergency, you want to be seen quickly. So, all the new changes were made with the most important people in mind, our community of patients who use our services.
Over the last 10 years, the emergency department has experienced an 86-percent increase in patients. In 2014, we treated almost 37,000 patients. With this growth spurt, came the need to expand our current department. An additional 3,500 square feet have been added to include three more major beds, which allow 40 additional patients per day to be seen. Also, five additional treatment bays were added to form our new results waiting area. In this area, patients will be able to await results of lab work, x-rays and other tests in the comfort of the emergency department instead of in the waiting area. While they are awaiting these results, care will be provided by clinical members of our staff who will be working in a newly added nursing station. This is an additional station to the main nursing station.
With the increase in the number of patient beds (there is a total of 27 treatment areas), we will be increasing our efficiency of operation. Changes in our patient flow process have been made to include a split triage area, which allows us to categorize our critical patients who need to be seen and the patients who are not experiencing life-threatening needs such as colds, flu and minor lacerations.
When a patient presents to the emergency department to be seen, one of the initial changes that will be noted is the fact that members of the hospital staff in in the waiting room to assist them by monitoring their conditions and noting how long they have been waiting. Hospital staff will also serve as liaisons for family members who are in the waiting room and have a loved one in the back being treated.
Of course, no one ever desires to visit the emergency department, however please know that when you need us, we are here to take care of you in the new, larger, more efficient and more patient-friendly emergency department at Springs Memorial Hospital.
